If you own your own small business then you will be well aware of the stresses and strains that running your own business means. Between juggling your employees, ensuring sales and balancing your books to ensure you are continuing to make a profit, there can often be little time for anything else.
However, whilst dealing with all these things and more, it is important that you make sure you are aware of the latest changes to employer law and how these may effect your business. Without acknowledging these changes to the law, you are setting yourself up for many issues that could leave your business penniless.
Employer laws are the legal guidelines laid down by the government to ensure employees are managed fairly and consistently. These laws revolve around statutory employee rights such as maternity and paternity leave, wages, working conditions, employing minors and employee treatment.
All organisations small or large must abide by these rules and regulations to ensure that they comply with the law. However knowing the basics of these laws is not enough, it is important that you keep up to date with legal changes and create policies and procedures that reflect these rules.
Small businesses who do not have a dedicated HR function to ensure these employer laws are implemented in your organisation may want to think about employing the services of an employment law professional. Usually this will be an employment law solicitor who works with organisations to ensure that their practices are accurate and up to date.
